YBNL boss, Nigerian rapper Olamide, has just hit another great milestone in his career by achieving over 1 billion streams on Spotify. This milestone has made him the first African rapper ever to attain such a feat which he partly attributes to his mélange of Afrobeats into his tracks and collaborations with other artists.
Last year, Olamide was the first African rapper to earn a Grammy nomination.
His collaborative single with Asake, ‘Amapiano’, was nominated in the inaugural Best African Music Performance but did not garner the award as it went to Tyla for her song ‘Water’.
Meanwhile, Nigerian RnB star Tems also made history with a whopping three nominations at the 67th Grammys.
This makes her the highest-nominated Nigerian this year with three nods for Best African Music Performance, Best Global Album, and Best RnB Song.
She also becomes the first Nigerian female artist to have a Grammy-nominated album as her debut ‘Born In The Wild’ enterted the Best Global Album category.
For her single ‘Burning’, Tems is the first African artist nominated in the RnB category.
This also qualifies her as the first African female lead artist nominated in a category that is not global.
She is now the record holder for the most Grammy nominations for a Nigerian female, counting to 6.
With only three nominations for the 67th Grammys, she is the second Nigerian with the most nominations in one Grammy year after Burna Boy, who had 4 nominations at the 66th Grammy.
